Apple only did a slight upgrade to this system for the model. It is a great pity that the graphics card can not be replaced : But to replace the processor with the i7 and the replacement for the ssd remains possible? While you could replace the CPU as well as blade SSD I would point out both are very difficult to get to as you need to fully remove the logic board as they are on the back side. Then think about adding the HDD when the warranty expires.
Use an external Thunderbolt drive for now. I don't think recommending the highest iMac 5k CPU is a good advice. I know when one has no budget limitations choosing the higher specs model is the biggest temptation, but in this case it could be not a wise choice.. This gap makes iMac with i7 CPUs pretty loud and noisy with the fans spinning up quite often, since the single fan is still the same while the produced heat is way more. I know hackintosh builds are able to get around some of this with selective hardware choices.
Posted on Jan 11, PM. Jan 11, PM in response to cnk In response to cnk Upgrading a GPU in an iMac at best is not a trivial task and in most cases is not possible for a number of reasons. First is the hardware on Macs is designed to run together, Apple designs and builds computers to run well extremely well with the hardware and software they provide. Varying from that formula normally does not help. In addition, the hardware from year to year varies.
So an iMac from likely won't be able to even fit a GPU from or earlier and and later. My suggestion is before you go any further, evaluate what your needs are. If you have a need for a more powerful GPU then get a replacement machine. However remember if you decide to go the Hackintosh route, you are on your own. You would be violating the Terms of Use of using the operating system and anything that occurs is solely your problem, in short expect no support in any fashion except from other hackers.

Hello everyone, I have a late iMac How to upgrade my graphic card? Pls help. Your iMac has an intergraded GPU chip and not upgradable. My system has a 2. It's only the Radeon models which have the MXM card which you could upgrade. Michael Sosa mosa01 Rep: 1. I am sure I can upgrade a Radeon m to a Radeon m on a iMac right?! These have very high throughput, making it possible for a GPU in an internal enclosure to offer almost as much graphics processing capability as one connected internally. But for anybody looking to extend the life of their existing Mac for a few more years to wait and see how the Apple Silicon transition shakes out, updates from Apple and key software partners make an eGPU a great choice.
Here are a couple of Thunderbolt 3 eGPU enclosure options out there for those considering this upgrade path, and the relative merits of each.
But the good news is that you can continually upgrade and replace these graphics cards to give your Mac even more of a boost as graphics tech improves. Image Credits: Razer.
