FSA and its Vision brand continue to be big component suppliers, providing cockpit and wheels to the team. Cofidis is the only team on Michelin tyres. That will be the bike used by the returned Mark Cavendish, who previously found so much success on the now-defunct Venge. The Roubaix may be swapped in as an option for the cobbled classics and the Shiv TT is on hand for time trials. Other Specialized kit includes the saddles, while the team will use the Wahoo Elemnt Bolt computer and the Tickr heart rate monitor.
Like Bora-Hansgrohe, the team will use Shimano groupsets and Pro bars and stems. EF Education-Nippo will continue on Cannondale bikes for , with the bike maker signing up to equip the team through to , a nine-year stretch. The black and pink colour scheme continues for , but like the Palace Skateboards collaboration in , expect some more eye-popping paintwork specials during the season. The partnership with Pinarello continues for Ineos Grenadiers — the team has been riding the Dogma in its different incarnations since , and the latest Dogma F12 continues into Will we see the team finally going disc this year?
Groupset components come from Shimano, who will provide the Dura-Ace Di2 drivetrain, while the team will roll on Newmen wheels with Continental tyres. The colour scheme is toned down to a more muted black with fluoro highlights, a change from the previous riot of blue and yellow. The Shimano drivetrains are supplemented by shiny, low-friction CeramicSpeed jockey wheels and bottom bracket bearings, plus Swissstop brake pads. Lotto Soudal keeps things Belgian and sticks with its long-time bike sponsor Ridley again this year, with the Noah Fast Disc its aero bike and the Helium SLX providing extra lift for hilly stages.
The team says the Helium SLX remains the most popular bike with its riders, although its sprinters go for the Noah Fast. Cavendish's S5 is fixed with the team's standard componentry, except for one major exemption — Cav refuses to run the Rotor chainrings on his bike. The whole setup is rounded out with a rather bling gold chain. Elsewhere, though, the bike is business as usual. His handlebar is 42cm wide and the stem is mm long. Of course, we didn't get to see the Manxman for long at this year's Tour following an incident on stage four which saw him crash out the race and Peter Sagan get removed.
DSM place four women in a final break of seven to guide the Dutch sprinter to her 13th race win of the season.
So why did his rails break? Perhaps getting caught up in a crash on stage 3 damaged the rails. Another major change in gear from the machines he first won on at the Tour de France — Cavendish is racing on clinchers instead of tubulars, along with the rest of his Deceuninck-Quick-Step team. Specialized Cotton tires are fast. In fact, they tested the fastest out of 34 tires we sent to Wheel Energy for rolling resistance testing. Cavendish uses a Shimano power meter, and his mechanics keep his chain tidy.
Instead of gluing or sticking a magnet on the frame for the power meter, the team uses a K-Edge Pro Power Magnet Chain Catcher, which does double duty. Join VeloNews.
