Who is arsenal player of the season

Fourth place was once again consolidated in the final weeks and little progress was made in the latter stages of the Champions League. There does, however, remain the chance to end their fans' long wait for a trophy with the FA Cup final. In the boardroom, the club broke their tradition of prudence and spent big to recruit a high-pedigree superstar. On the pitch, the players began to display the bite and backbone they had long been derided for lacking. With the defining fixture still to be played, the likelihood of Arsenal, at long last, concluding a season with their trophy cabinet restocked remains high.

His importance to his team cannot be overstated. His tireless forward runs also brought the best from his creative colleagues, whose form has dipped notably in his absence. If any complaints are lodged regarding his debut campaign in the Premier League, it can only be because his early displays set the bar at such a height. In simple numerical terms his contribution has been telling. Having led the assists chart for a sustained spell, he sits joint-fourth at the end of the season, surely having suffered without the fortifying effects of his usual winter break.

Less quantifiably, the spirit and optimism with which his acquisition lifted one of England's biggest clubs was, for a few months at least, genuinely transformative. That was undoubtedly a huge boost for Arsenal, as the former Real Madrid man is undoubtedly the club's best player when on form.

The Germany international, who has amassed 12 assists and five goals this season, retains that rare and valuable ability to create something out of nothing, making him a cult hero at the Emirates. Ozil's performance against Tottenham in November will live long in the memory but his target now is to establish himself as a truly inspirational character.

Conceding in the dying embers, as was the case against Birmingham in their League Cup final defeat at Wembley, continues to trouble the north Londoners, who have shown flickers of brilliance once again this term.

Honourable mentions go to Robin van Persie, who has once again been relied on to put the ball in the back of the net when those around him have conspired to do so, and Johan Djourou, a central defender who is showing ever increasing promise in an area which needs somewhat of an overhaul in the summer. However, the pair just missed out on our shortlist.

Below are Goal. We then name our winner at the bottom before leaving it up to you, the readers, to have your say. Waltzing through defence after defence with consummate ease and adding finishes worthy of the build-up, Nasri has stepped up this season and become the player of which he has only shown glimpses in the past. Player of the Season awards are usually decided on the basis of consistent performances, high-value contributions and all-round improvement in their individual play, with several Arsenal players edging their way onto the list for the first time.

The England man has contributed the majority of his 10 goals from the right wing, after confirming that he wants to play on the flank.

Why everyone wants Buffon to win the CL. Walcott's technical ability has previously been brought into question but his qualities - particularly pace - make him an excellent impact player to come off the substitutes bench when the opposition defenders are tired and a game needs to be stretched.

His hat-trick against former club Southampton in January will be remembered as a season highlight.
