Improve this answer. Tablemaker Tablemaker Thanks for the explanation - that Ivan was hallucination of Guilt — user I do not think the film accurately reflected what real insomnia is like. In the film Reznik claims to have been not able to sleep for an entire year. This is just not the case with common actual insomniacs who merely have trouble falling or staying asleep. However, insomnia is caused by intense stress which Trevor did undergo to begin his year of no sleep. The second concept covered in the film is hallucinations.
I think it is somewhat accurate that Trevor has these hallucinations just as he is about to fall asleep. However, his hallucinations are highly dramatized. Hardly anyone has hallucinations like his unless they are under the influence of a drug like LSD.
But by the strict definition of hallucination given in the textbook, nothing in the movie contradicts the term. Memory repression is mostly accurately depicted in the film, The Machinist. Trevor does seem to use it as a defense mechanism to fight against the intense guilt and shame of the hit and run incident. However, repressing the memory did not decrease his anxiety, it remained the same or may have even increased.
And Trevor was certainly not trying to protect his self-concept because he let himself lose all that weight and began to act very strange. He must have done it so he could render himself innocent of murder in his mind. In conclusion, I found the film to be extremely interesting and enjoyable. Three key psychological concepts that are addressed are insomnia, hallucinations, and memory reppression.
Some aspects of these terms are displayed accurately in the film. Altough many are over dramatized and high exaggerated to a point where no one would believe it might actually happen.

It's adorable how the movie constantly establishes new plot points without ever getting tedious. As the story goes on it gets hard to believe that the ending will be able to explain everything and you start pondering that there can only be one possible conclusion for all the weird events. It may be disappointing at first to learn that your predictions are probably dead-on and you might go: "Not that old twist again. Much later, when you've already left the theater and you rethink the whole thing, you'll find that the script is much cleverer than you had thought at first.
To me the biggest achievement of the movie in retrospective is, that it's never creepy just for the sake of freaking the audience out and hell, the carnival-sequence is so friggin creepy and well made, it's delightful. Every scene has its purpose and that is not often the case in horror and mystery movies. Although the whole cast did a fine job, Christian Bale's terrific performance must be mentioned. Usually I'm annoyed by stories about actors losing or gaining weight in preparation for a role, because mostly it's uncalled for anyway and not even worth a mention.
What Bale did to prepare for "The Machinist", however, is nothing short of heroic. He lost 60 pounds and looks so unhealthy throughout the whole movie that it's hard to believe he turned into himself again after the director yelled "cut! I can recommend "The Machinist" to anybody who's looking for a movie that keeps you intrigued longer than just during its running time. If after 10 minutes you like the movie, after days you'll find yourself still obsessed with it.
I love it, when a movie does that to me! Superunknovvn Apr 17, FAQ 3. Why did he wash his hands with bleach? Is Trevor imagining things? Who is Ivan? Details Edit.
